Atoll Scuba in association with Turkish Airlines announces an event named Dive48 to be held on 26th – 28th February 2016 at Maaya Thila, North Ari Atoll. The main objective of the event is to raise awareness about climate change, endangered species and the environment in general. Dive teams will be in the water at the dive site for 48 hours recording images of marine life, and these images will be used to analyse and understand the ecology of the coral reef. The images will be fed live on the projects’ website and Haveeru Online so people around the world will be able to virtually dive on a Maldivian reef at any given time no matter the time zone.
We pledge to donate contributions to the Olive Ridley Project (www.oliveridleyproject.org), which is initiated by a group of Marine biologists in the Maldives working towards preventing entanglement of Olive Ridley Turtles and other marine organisms. The Olive Ridley Project is actively fighting ghost nets in the Indian Ocean through research, removal and awareness.
The event will be covered by local and international media, allowing us to communicate the message all over the globe. The event will be attended by a freediving world record holder from Turkey, and it is supported by Turkish Airlines, Coca Cola, SSI, Asian Diver, IUCN, Fourth Element, TGI Maldives, Dive Butler International, Lovebird Holidays, Zabeeh Marketing and a number of resorts. As the largest diving event to be held in Maldives to this date the event team ensures that it contributes to promote the tourism industry. “The event will be held every year from now on with remarkable improvements in its concept and scale” according to the organizers.
